Una Europa Summer School
In mid-June, we welcomed over 40 international doctoral candidates to the Düppel campus for this year's Una Europa Summer School, “Bridging Disciplines for One Health Solutions.” Under the direction of Prof. Jürgen Zentek , guests from all eleven Una Europa universities spent a week exchanging ideas with experts from the partner universities and supplementing this with practical applications, hands-on workshops, and excursions, including to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment.

Open house under bright sunshine
At this point our Open House is traditional. On June 14, our department once again offered its many guests, young and old, a colorful and successful afternoon with hands-on activities, hands-on research, and exciting insights into the animal world. As usual, the weather was also very cooperative.

DFG funds two new research training groups in Veterinary Medicine at Freie Universität Berlin
The research training groups “Investigation of behavioral and stress responses to understand and improve models for infectious diseases in animals” and “One Health approach to soil-transmitted helminths” will be funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for an initial period of five years starting in spring 2026. The DFG has approved a total of 18 new research training groups, which will receive a total of around 130 million euros in the first funding period. Research training groups offer doctoral students the opportunity to pursue a doctorate in a structured research and qualification program at a high academic level. The DFG currently funds a total of 214 research training groups, four of which are led by Freie Universität Berlin and another four involve the FU.

Replace, Reduce, Refine: Einstein Center 3R is continued
Based on the 3R principle , which was developed 65 years ago by William Russel and Rex Burch , the Center is concerned with the question of how animal experiments can be replaced , the number of laboratory animals reduced or the stress on laboratory animals alleviated ( refine ). The center is active in the areas of communication, training and research.

Web cam footage from the new nesting box for kestrels

Prize for excellent teaching goes to Prof. Sonja Bröer and Christina Herre
Congratulations! In the "pre-clinical training" category, Christina Herre received the award for her course lesson "Abdominalitus" as part of the Anatomy I - Situs course for the 2nd semester. Prof. Bröer received the teaching award in the "clinical training" category for the galenic practical course in her subject "Drug and Narcotics Law" in the 7th semester. The award ceremony took place on February 14 as part of the 3rd Berlin Veterinarians' Meeting, hosted by the Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer der Veterinärmedizin an der Freien Universität Berlin e.V. and the Berliner Tierärztliche Gesellschaft e.V. in the Equine Clinic lecture hall.

A warm welcome: Prof. Isabelle Ruhnke, Head of the Poultry Department of the Farm Animal Clinic
Prof. Dr. Isabelle Ruhnke has been head of the Poultry Department at the Farm Animal Clinic since January 1. She is a veterinary specialist in animal nutrition and a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition. Before Prof. Ruhnke returned to our department – she studied veterinary medicine here from 2002 to 2008, obtained her doctorate in 2011 and her PhD in 2014 – she worked as Associate Professor Animal Sciences at the University of New England, Australia and from 2021 to 2023 as Adjunct Professor at the City University Hong Kong. We wish Prof. Ruhnke a good start!

In the nationwide Professor of the Year competition, Prof. Dr. Sonja Bröer takes first place in the natural sciences and medicine category. She received the award from the Unicum portal for her special commitment to supporting students in their career preparation.

Cannabis compound against intestinal inflammation
There is still a great need for research into the effect of the ingredients on the body in the wake of the legalization of cannabis. For the non-psychoactive cannabidiol, it has now been shown that it has anti-inflammatory properties that promote intestinal health. Researchers at Freie Universität Berlin have analyzed this at the molecular level and present their findings in the journal Materials Today Bio .
