At this point our Open House is traditional. On June 14, our department once again offered its many guests, young and old, a colorful and successful afternoon with hands-on activities, hands-on research, and exciting insights into the animal world. As usual, the weather was also very cooperative.

Visitors were given a wide range of insights behind the scenes of veterinary training, research, and practice. For the first time, lectures were also held in the seminar room of the TZR, giving the interested public an insight into science. Prof. Benedikt Kaufer gave a lecture on “The race against viruses – how they change and escape vaccine protection” and answered questions from guests. But the highlight of the day – alongside the roasted pig and homemade cakes – was once again the rally with a total of 24 stations at the stands of research institutes, clinics, and organizations such as “Veterinarians Without Borders” and the Berlin Veterinary Chamber. Over 200 children took part this year, receiving a cuddly toy and an “animal diploma” at the end.
Other highlights for children included a visit to the plushy toy hospital, the petting zoo at the Farm Animal Clinic, and the falconry team. The Student Office, trainees from the department, and the Berlin Veterinary Association provided information about study opportunities and career prospects in veterinary medicine.
FU President Prof. Günter Ziegler also took part in the open house again, partly because he wanted to personally congratulate Prof. Christa Thöne-Reineke and Prof. Susanne Hartmann on the positive funding decisions by the DFG for their graduate programs.
Thank you!
A big thank you to the organizing team and to all colleagues, students, and partner institutions who once again participated with great enthusiasm—and, of course, thank you to the numerous guests!
