Prof. Dr. Isabelle Ruhnke

Prof. Dr. Isabelle Ruhnke has been head of the Poultry Department at the Farm Animal Clinic since January 1. She is a veterinary specialist in animal nutrition and a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition. Before Prof. Ruhnke returned to our department – she studied veterinary medicine here from 2002 to 2008, obtained her doctorate in 2011 and her PhD in 2014 – she worked as Associate Professor Animal Sciences at the University of New England, Australia and from 2021 to 2023 as Adjunct Professor at the City University Hong Kong.

When I think of veterinary medicine, I first think of:

My passion, the incredibly good quality of this education and the often underestimated skills and abilities of veterinarians.

I “envy” the following animal for one particular characteristic:

Cats, they simply do what they want elegantly and efficiently, without a guilty conscience.

As a child, I actually wanted to be a

A lion tamer at the zoo.

If I was given two months' paid vacation tomorrow, I would:

Sleep, ride, read and go to work. In that order 😊.

My tip for first-year students:

Just try things out and be open to everything! Take advantage of the opportunities offered to you and go even if you think you're not interested! Let yourself be surprised, life begins where your comfort zone ends.
