The Chicken’s Defenses

Press release № 076/2021 from May 03, 2021 The German Research Foundation (DFG) has approved funding for a new international Research Unit in veterinary medicine with participation by Freie Universität Berlin. The aim of the Research Unit entitled “ImmunoChick – Analysis of the avian immune response in the context of infections” is to gain a better understanding of the immune system of chicks and to use this knowledge for the development of new vaccines and for the improvement of animal health. The Research Unit consists of five German research institutes and one British research institute. The researchers are scientists from the fields of immunology and infectious disease medicine who contribute their expertise in viral, bacterial, and parasitic infectious diseases in chickens. The Research Unit is being funded with more than three million euros. The first funding period will run through July 2025.

Press release No. 096/2020 from Jun 10, 2020 Researchers from Freie Universität Berlin at the Institute for Animal and Environmental Hygiene and the Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University are collaborating on the topic of alternative personal protection equipment. The testing was conducted in the context of the EIT Health Project ViruShield, supported by the European Union, with the objective to discover alternative filter materials for face masks in light of tight supply and globally imbalanced supply chains for personal protective equipment.

FAO Reference Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance (FAO RC-AMR) at the Department of Veterinary Medicine

On November 11th, 2019, the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the FU Berlin received the official recognition as FAO Reference Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance (FAO RC-AMR), making it the first and so far only reference centre of its kind in Germany.
