Short portrait
The Department of Poultry Diseases at the FU Berlin is responsible for the more than 10,000 bird species that are grouped in the class Aves (birds). These species include both animals that are kept for food production, such as broilers, laying hens or fattening turkeys and their products, as well as ornamental and pedigree poultry.
One focus of our work is on pathological-anatomical, virological, bacteriological, parasitological and molecular biological investigations to diagnose a wide range of infectious diseases relevant to poultry. Our research focuses in particular on various viral and bacterial respiratory pathogens in poultry. Other research projects address issues related to antibiotic-resistant microorganisms and animal welfare aspects.
In addition to the various laboratory areas, the Institute for Poultry Diseases has a department for ornamental and pedigree poultry.
Teaching
The Institute of Poultry Diseases offers lectures and clinical demonstrations on the diseases of commercial poultry, as well as ornamental, zoo and wild birds, for the eighth semester. In addition to the aetiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, therapy and prophylaxis of infectious diseases, the keeping of commercial poultry and hobby birds, as well as laboratory diagnostic methods, are also covered.
In addition, elective courses are offered to deepen selected topics, for which external lecturers are also invited.
Furthermore, a course is held for students in their ninth and tenth semesters as part of the clinical rotation in the livestock track, in which propaedeutics, laboratory diagnostic methods and the dissection process are practiced.
External services
The Institute for Poultry Diseases offers a variety of diagnostic methods. This includes necropsies of productive poultry and ornamental birds, parasitological and bacteriological investigations, including salmonella diagnostics according to EU regulations and the preparation of antibiograms, virus isolation tests, molecular biological investigations for the detection and typing of various pathogens, and the testing of sera for antibodies against bacterial and viral pathogens in poultry.
The Department of Ornamental and Breeding Poultry is also dedicated to the diagnosis, therapy and prophylaxis of privately kept birds. The facility includes X-ray, endoscopy, operating room and stables for inpatient admission of patients.
