The Joint Master in Veterinary Public Health (MVPH) of the Department of Veterinary Medicine of FU Berlin

From 2003 to 2015 the “Master in Veterinary Public Health (MVPH)” was jointly executed in 6 editions with the Chiang Mai University (CMU) in Thailand (http://vphcap.wixsite.com/vphcap/study ).

Our partner in this Cross-Border Joint Degree Programme, the Veterinary Faculty of CMU, provided excellent facilities and established the Veterinary Public Health Centre for Asia Pacific (VPHCAP) (http://vphcap.wixsite.com/vphcap ). This centre is the regional hub for the Southeast- Asia region in training, extension services and research in VPH.

In the course delivery the Institute for Meat Hygiene, Meat Technology and Food Science, Department for Farm Animal and Public Health in Veterinary Medicine, University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna / Austria (http://www.vetmeduni.ac.at/en/institute-of-meat-hygiene-meat-technology-and-food-science/ ) - - one of the most reputed European institutions in the field of research and teaching in hygiene and technology of food of animal origin - - had been involved throughout the programme.

Scholarships as well as tutorial, professional and technical support for the scholarship holders had been provided throughout the Joint Programme by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with its then special support programme “Postgraduate Courses for Professionals with Relevance to Developing Countries” (https://www.daad.de/der-daad/unsere-aufgaben/entwicklungszusammenarbeit/en/).
Private companies from Southeast Asia added to it constantly, whereas the Thai Ministry of Education, USAID as well as other international donor organisations also contributed.

In the beginning, 2003 - 2006 co-funding for the Joint MVPH Programme was provided by the EU AsiaLink Programme for regional and multilateral networking between higher education institutions in Europe, South and South East Asia as from 2003 – 2006.

The programme was accredited by the AGEH in 2005 and re-accredited in 2010.

The ALUMNI network

The present status of the MVPH Alumni network in Asia is best viewed on the page of our partner institution, the Veterinary Public Health Centre for Asia Pacific of the Chiang Mai University Thailand  (http://vphcap.wixsite.com/vphcap/alumni).
Upon completion of the 6th Joint MVPH Course in September 2015 70 graduates from 16 countries (Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, PR China) are now enjoying the alumni status and most of them became members of our “Veterinary Public Health Association for Asia Pacific” (see also facebook: https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=veterinary%20public%20health%20association%20for%20asia%20pacific) .

The 1st Joint International Conference of the Association of Institutions for Tropical Veterinary Medicine (AITVM) and the Society of Tropical Veterinary Medicine (STVM) in September 2016 was the latest opportunity where alumni of the postgraduate training programmes of the unit International Animal Health had the chance to meet. An opportunity well taken!
A satellite meeting for Alumni of the Freie Universitaet Berlin (FUB) was held during the AITVM-STVM conference; the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) financed 25 alumni from Africa and Southeast Asia to attend this meeting and the AITVM-STVM conference through an Alumni Conference Grant Package (http://www.aitvm-stvm2016.com/awards/DAAD-Stipends-for-FUB-Alumni/index.html ).

In October 2010 the 1st DAAD Alumni Workshop “The concept `One health- One medicine´: Chances and challenges for Veterinary Public Health (VPH) in Asia” was held at the partner university in Chiang Mai.
