Nutritional aspects of digestive physiology

Studies on digestive physiology are in part done with live tissues in so-called “Ussing chambers“, which allow the examination of transepithelial mechanisms such as resorption of nutrients or integrity of intestinal tissues. In these studies with live tissues from pigs or poultry, the effects of different experimental diets on nutrient digestion as well as their impact on interactions between host and microbiota can be studied.
