Training to become a specialist veterinarian
Qualification as a specialist veterinarian for physiology can take place at the Institute.
Definition
The area includes:
- Research into basic functions of life processes, especially in vertebrates,
- Differentiation between physiological and pathophysiological functions of the organism,
- Development of special knowledge in experimental techniques on biological material.
Training process and time:
- 4 years working in the following institutions:
- relevant institutes of veterinary universities,
- Training centers and other institutions in Germany and abroad with a
comparable field of work
Up to 3.5 years with an authorized specialist veterinarian are recognized.
Training content:
Profound knowledge of life processes at the cell, tissue, organ and organism levels and their regulation must be demonstrated, organs and the entire organism as well as their regulation. This basic knowledge in the following areas is a prerequisite:
- Knowledge of physiology:
- Fundamentals of cell physiology including methods of cell biological work,
- Nervous and hormonal information transfer,
- Motor skills and muscle physiology,
- Adaptation of the organism to stress,
- Sensory physiology, in particular nociception and pain processing,
- Blood and immune defense

b) Basics of hematology laboratory diagnostics- Function and regulation of the heart and circulatory system,
- Function and regulation of breathing,
- Function and regulation of the kidney,
- Physiology of the gastrointestinal tract,
- Reproduction in female and male animals,
- Milk production, milk composition and control of lactation,
- Thermal balance and temperature regulation,
- Regulation of the water and electrolyte balance,
- Regulation of the acid-base balance,
- Energy balance.
2. Knowledge of animal welfare:
- Fundamental legally relevant regulations,
- Special experimental techniques on laboratory and farm animals,
- Experimental design and data analysis.
