The Institute for Veterinary Epidemiology and Biostatistics of the Freie Universität Berlin is participating in a German-wide study to investigate the prevalence of shigatoxin-producing strains of Escherichia coli in postweaning piglet herds. In cooperation with the IDT Biologika GmbH, Dessau-Roßlau a total of approximately 300 farms will be visited that are representative for Germany in demographic distribution and structure. On each farm, data regarding the herd health status, animal husbandry and hygiene, as well as faecal pool samples will be collected. Besides the prevalence estimation, the objective of this study is to derive risk factor models for the outbreak of Edema disease, which is caused by these bacteria.
