Bacteriological Services: Identification and differentiation of clinical samples

Bacteriological services are offered not only for the clinical facilities of the department of veterinary medicine, FU Berlin, but also for veterinarians located outside of the university. Next to conventional bacteriological differentiation methods modern molecular detection techniques, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), comparative 16/23S rDNA sequence analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridisation assays (FISH) are applied to ensure most accurate identification of bacterial pathogens. Because cultivation of many bacteria is often very difficult and time consuming by standard cultivation techniques, in particular the usage of the comparative 16/23S rDNA sequence analysis and specific markers, e. g. virulence factors, is getting increasingly more and more important in the differentiation and identification of bacterial pathogens in clinical samples.
